Day 5 – Buh bye Colorado and hello Utah!!
Today has been a fairly busy day of driving. My only plan today was to go to Hanging Lake in Colorado then on to Moab, UT. So I woke up around 6:45, made some Black Rifle coffee and instant oatmeal. Then hit the road toward Hanging Lake.
The further west I’ve gotten the more “adventure bikes” I’ve seen. Makes me want to buy one now. Maybe in the future.
While driving towards Hanging Lake I drove across Hoosier Pass. The mountain pass is located on the Continental Divide which I thought was neat. I even went through “South Park”. Nothing too exciting happened along the way but I did run into a bunch of road construction when I got closer to my exit for Hanging Lake. It just so happened that my exit was closed. I did find an alternate route but learned the parking for Hanging Lake was full. So I kept on trucking.
A little over a hour outside of Moab I took a break to stretch and eat. I stopped at a Wendy’s which had a map of the US on the wall with push pins from where people was from. Too bad someone from Lexington was already there before me. BOOO!!!! I also took this time to make camping reservations. Once again the KOA wasn’t available so I had to look for alternatives. Lucky for me there are 4,076,326 campgrounds in Moab. I counted them.
After looking for a few minutes I settled on Canyonlands RV park and campground. Their website sold me. HA! Just goes to show you have to put some work into your website to attract business. Well and they are in the middle of Moab on Main street so that may have had a little factor in my decision. Upon checking in they gave me free cookies!!!!! Can we say customer for life??? Sign me up!
It looked like it might start storming soon so I set up camp as quick as possible. Once the tent and hammock were up I took off to explore. My first stop was a local outdoors store. Like I need anything else. None the less I went it to plunder the goodies. I wanted to hit a park while I was out and Arches National Park was the closest. I really can’t say anything about it but… WOW! I drove through a bunch of it then parked to hit a couple hiking trails. I only hiked maybe 4 miles all together. I’ll let the pictures do the talking. Don’t get me wrong I loved the scenery in Colorado but man o’ man Utah has some sights of it’s own.
Now I’m sitting in the hammock writing this and debating on what I should do tomorrow. I’ll be driving to Las Vegas tomorrow but I feel like I need to explore Moab some more. Maybe rent a Jeep or take a jet boat ride down the Colorado river. Vegas is 6 hours or so from where I am now so if I got out of here by 3 I would still be in Vegas at a decent time. Shoot Vegas never sleeps so getting there at 2am probably wouldn’t be an issue. Since I’ve been to Vegas before I’m not too concerned with how much time I spend there. I guess I’ll make that decision tomorrow.
Stay tuned and enjoy the pictures!
